How often should you weigh yourself? This is really important, trust me! But before we get to answer…yes I will still check my morning naked weight, just not every day. The first time I agreed to put my scale away and only weigh myself once a week I realized I weighed myself a lot more than once a day. Oh yeah…I weighed myself many times each day. Chris recommended that I stop weighing myself every day. I did stop the daily weigh ins for a while but it didn’t stick. This time…it’s going to stick. I’ll be weighing myself again on Friday morning.
I thought I’d do a little research to see what the world-wide web says about how often we should weigh in. The first article I came across states “daily weighing can lead to discouragement and potential diet sabotage if you see a higher number on the scale than you saw the day before”. Hmm fascinating thats the same thing Chris told me…imagine that. Click here to read the full article. It also notes a study in which overweight adults who weighed themselves more often lost less weight that those that weighed themselves less often.
If you need a 3rd opinion…I found another article also recommending weighing in once a week. Here’s a link: click here. Let’s be real here. You, me, we…are not going to lose enough weight in a single day that weighing ourselves daily will be accurately reflected on our fancy digital scales. There are a lot of things that affect our weight and it will fluctuate from day-to-day. There really is nothing more frustrating than getting on the scale and seeing a higher number than the day before, so put your scales away and stop torturing yourselves. I am!
So what causes weight fluctuations anyways? Eating and drinking – yes food and beverages, shocking. Water both consuming it and being under-hydrated can result in your body retaining water – yikes drink water it’s good for you. Glycogen, which is your carb storage and this process also requires water – hmm. The amount of salt in your body…salt retains water (so put that salt shaker down and check the sodium content in foods you are consuming). Finally…exercise can also cause fluctuations in your weight.
Are you with me on this? Are you going to put your scale away and only bring it out once a week. Yes, I had to actually put my scale in another room so I won’t hop on it every time I enter the bathroom. You are going to have to settle for my morning naked weight updates on a weekly basis now.
Until tomorrow! Kathi
